Restaurants

AltaMarea Restaurant

Website

AltaMarea (Italian for “high tide”) is a nod to the incredible power and bounty of the sea. A longtime dream of Chef & Owner Simone Parisi, Alta Marea is the fourth of his Northern Italian dining concepts, but the first to be focused almost exclusively on the culinary delights of the Tuscan Coast.

ALTAMAREA
17 King Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084 | 904-615-1667
www.altamareadowntown.com

Like so many Florentines, Chef Simone spent his summers on the northern Italian coast, free diving, spearfishing, and boating from cove to cove. His family passionately loves seafood and he came to appreciate the unique flavors of everything from octopus to sea urchins to branzino. At Alta Marea, Chef Simone uses a combination of local and Mediterranean seafood to bring the fresh, clean, and unforgettable flavors of the Tuscan Coast to every plate. Paper-thin slices of tuna, swordfish and octopus combined with the crisp flavors of citrus, olive oil, and fried capers. Wild-striped sea bass roasted in a stone-hearth oven with a hint of rosemary and lemon. Housemade pasta tossed with yellowtail snapper and fresh heirloom tomatoes.

While the food is certainly the restaurant’s main attraction, it wouldn’t be a proper establishment in charming St. Augustine without a bit of something “extra.” Located on the historic city square, Alta Marea is just steps away from the harbor and the alluring saltwater of the Atlantic Ocean. Perfect for a pre- or post-dinner walk. If that's not enough, you can watch fresh pasta being made by hand in the front window, peruse the Italian wine selection inside the walk-in wine cellar, or admire the painted octopus that spans the dining room wall.

Vale Food Co.

Website

Vale Food Co. is a Florida-born, fast-casual eatery with a focus on healthy foods, located in Brooklyn Station in Jacksonville -- just off Riverside Avenue. With restaurant locations cropping up across the state, what we love most about the Vale concept is their focus on real, whole foods that are ready to go fast, plus the customization that comes with every order. It's a choose your own adventure! Guests pick a bowl size and base (brown rice, sweet potato noodles, greens or other) -- then add a protein, a sauce, plus an added "boost" --- which are additional fun (and tasty) toppings like sunflower seeds, sprouts, or feta cheese.

There are plenty of options for those eating vegan or gluten-free too -- with seasonal menu changes that reflect produce available throughout the year. If you're not in the mood for a hearty bowl, you can also visit their "Super Food Station" which showcases lighter options including colorful acai and poke bowls, plus avocado and nut butter toasts. El Jefe Tex-Mex

Website

Nestled into the hip, historic Murray Hill neighborhood in Jacksonville, El Jefe Jax is a casual Tex-Mex eatery with a beautifully curated menu from award-winning Chef Scotty Schwartz and Chef Jose Salome. With an emphasis on borderland cooking (that is, regionally inspired cuisine from the Texas-Mexico border), stepping through El Jefe's brightly painted street-front door might easily leave you wondering whether you've stepped foot into Mexico or Marfa. A beautiful saloon-like, full service bar (made of wood and boasting funky details) greets guests upon entrance, followed shortly by cheerful turqoise walls, showcasing an array of iconic artisan art. The menu at El Jefe is equally full of surprises (with plenty of familiar items too)--- and what really sets it apart from other local tex-mex restaurants is its emphasis on authentic ingredients and traditional recipes that reflect food specifically found on the US-Mexico border: flautas, hot tamales, street corn, fajitas, tacos, and enchiladas.

Our favorite dishes? The ones you'd be hard-pressed to rustle up elsewhere in the region;  a San Antonio Puffy Taco, posole verde, and their house-made mole (served with grilled chicken). Another not-to-miss item on the menu is their Queso Fundido -- served with real jack cheese and poblano chiles melted by broiling -- which signals a pleasant departure from the other white "queso" so commonly served around these parts.  We've not yet tried their desserts but think you'll agree: add one or two fresh citrus margaritas to your lunch or dinner, and andale!  El Jefe is a fiesta.

At 23,000 sq ft, this candy emporium manufactures a line of handcrafted quality chocolates and sells over a thousand different types of candies. The location boasts three floors where you will find a full restaurant and bar, an ice cream parlor and a toy store, all under one roof! The interactive candy factory is gluten-friendly, offering plenty of options for people with dietary restrictions. From Pecan Caramel Clusters, to their #1 seller, Sea Salt Caramels, the candy factory will have your mouth watering and your sweet-tooth filled!

Sweet Pete’s is also masterful at providing fun, hands-on, interactive experiences; candy classes, kids camps, private parties, fieldtrips and more. The team at Pete's loves to share their love of candy-making and at any one of their classes, their enthusiasm shows. Everyday, there is also a 30-minute guided tour at the factory, where guests can design their own chocolate bars to take home. We'll worth the visit!

Finally, have a large group and want to catch up before dinner downtown? Book a pre-dinner Happy Hour at the factory with a private room, cocktails and an appetizer at a very reasonable price (not to mention colorful murals and delightful whimsical decor).
