Gilbert’s Loquat BBQ Sauce

Chef Kenny Gilbert shared with us the secret to his delicious loquat BBQ sauce found readily available at his restaurant in Fernandina Beach. Place all ingredients into a large pot. Turn stove on medium heat. Cook slow for 1 hour. Purée BBQ sauce with hand blender until smooth.



The Lowdown on Loquats

Be on the look out for loquats! Often overlooked, these little fruits are related to apples, pears, peaches and nectarines -- and they might even be growing in your backyard.


  • 2 quarts Loquats, seeded
  • 1 quart Tomatoes, canned/peeled
  • 1 cup Tomato Paste
  • 1 cup Dijon Mustard
  • 1/2 cup Brown Mustard
  • 3 cups Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 3 cups Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup Lite Soy Sauce
  • 1 cup Alaga Cane Syrup
  • 2 Fresno Chilis, stemmed
  • 3 tbsp Chinese Five Spice
  • 1 tbsp Kosher Salt
