Welcome to Floridian Fall, with summer-like weather in the day and cooler temperatures once the sun goes down. That slight seasonal change brings opportunities to broaden our wardrobe as we enjoy outdoor dining spots in the evening, especially one with a view like Estrella Cocina in Downtown Jacksonville. This Mexican-style restaurant and bar offers a view of the Main Street Bridge in one direction and the under-development Laura Street Trio in another. Nestled between a few tall buildings, you definitely get a big city vibe on this rooftop.

Estrella Cocina offers a casual fine dining experience that has quickly become a popular spot for groups of friends, business meetings and hopefully for some, the first of many dates. With such an eclectic customer base, it's not surprising the main question the staff receive from customers calling to make reservations is “what should I wear?”

The beauty of casual fine dining establishments, especially those with outdoor seating, is that you can dress formal or casual. Many diners treat going to rooftop spots as an event; by choosing a smart casual approach one will never feel out of place. Gents, find your good pair of jeans or chino shorts, a clean polo shirt, ditch the boat shoes and opt in for leather driver shoes for a classier look. Don’t forget about grabbing a good pair of no show socks for that sockless look! (Pro tip: You extend the life of your loafers by doing that.) One alternative to a regular t-shirt is a 3-button collar band shirt that can be dressed up with a sports coat and jeans or more casual on its own.

What if your style is more urban? Don’t feel out of place; there are a few ways to elevate that look too. Not all jogger pants are made equal. Consider tailored joggers that offer more of a straight fit: not tight, but not baggy. Try an oversized polo shirt and pair it with matching shades and a cap. As the seasonal weather changes, find your favorite pair of combed cotton socks to pair with your favorite pair of sneakers.

Estrella Cocina’s craft cocktail menu offers plenty to enjoy on the rooftop. Be sure to try any of these three house specialties: Wahaka Weekend, Flor de Cielo with Manifest gin and Untie Mai Tai featuring Marlin & Barrel rum.

And for the food? There is plenty to love. Here are a few favorite dishes constructed by Chef Dante Vargas. Start with the Tortilla Chips and Salsa, definitely not your standard appetizer. The chips are seasoned with spices that complement the three different salsas. For the cheese lovers, try the Baked Cheese and Chorizo appetizer. Sharing is encouraged but it's understandable if you don’t want to after that first cheesy bite. Ever had lobster tacos? Expect large tacos with lobster meat in every single bite.

Looking for something heartier? Get ready to devour the Orange-Pineapple Glazed Ribs with meat that will fall off the bones, over a bed of rice and beans. My personal favorite dish is the Shrimp and Rice, Camarones en Mojo de Ajo, served with fingerling potatoes. And for my sweet tooth friends, be on the lookout for Dulce De Leche Chocolate Mousse. This housemade dessert packs a little heat, and the cinnamon sticks garnish may remind you of candied churros.

Dressing up and enjoying the latest Jacksonville has to offer should always be effortlessly fun and decidedly delicious. See you on the rooftops, Jax!
